HI All,

I thought I'd throw this one out to the fleet following a recent discussion at work about sponsorship plans for next year.

What do people think makes a sponsor of an event worth having and worth while? I've been to sum events where there have been some slightly odd sponsors and you wonder how it benefits either the fleet or the sponsor to be involved.

From a business point of view I know what we (Hyde Sails, for those that don't know me) are looking to get from any sponsorship we do. As a regular competitor I also know what I would like to see in return for the sponsors presence at an event, however I'd be really keen to get the views of others.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Tobes

Good point well made that man. Got any hot floosies at Hydes then Tobes?......:-)
But seriously, if the sponsors representative came up to me and said good effort young man, like your style but the boat may go quicker if you do this or that, then, because of the kind words, I would be tempted to use my hard earned cash with them. Tuning clinics etc are a great way for sponsors to interact with potential clients and vice-verce.
The human interaction counts for a lot. I fully realise that Tobes may have an issue with this with Ospreys, and probably my shed in particular, but there are other classes out there as well

Some years ago I also bought loads of Hawaiian Tropic suntan cream. This was based on the prescence of scantily clad promotions girlies. A handy tip there I think.

I think that the sponsor and competitor are both after the same thing ultimately, to promote their name or brand in the best way possible.
Classes and competitors, rarely have any marketing budget and the best way to promote themselves is to encourage a sponsor to promote and market the event/class for them. Volkswagon seem to have done a good job for the SB3 and obviously get something from it.

If you could follow the example of the german FD class and arrange for a small portable beer shop with no till facilities to be open after racing every day that would be good!

Or take the concept one step further and have a large portable beer shop and a bratwurst schiff with no till facility, plus some of Tobes' Hyde sails brolly/trolley dollies. Starting to look like we might have the germ of a plan here. Now, who's paying?

sorry to be mundane! but one problem in the uk has been the total lack of interest in 'general' sailing by the press. ie the sponcer does not get a coverage in the press or on the telly.
we have tried hard in previous years even when the FD was still an olympic class but did not get much responce. we need the same pull, ie royalty, like the dragons!
or perhaps we should get hugh heffener and his 'friends' to attend, that might bring in the press!

Thanks for the valid point John, it has been something we have discussed at length. As a sponsor of any event we would be looking to work with th event to maximise the exposure, both by encouraging the event to get maximum publicity and by directly promoting our own activities and thereby the event itself.

That said I like the idea of Hugh and his 'friends', having a USP like that is aways good for the press!!!!!!!
